Like the American Kennel Club's The Complete Dog Book (now in its 20th printing), this is the book for horse breeds. For each of North American breeds--from ponies and small horses to pleasure horses, draft horses, and thoroughbred racers--the massive ,word guide provides an official history, detailed conformation ideals. Keeping a backyard flock means you can be a vital part of protecting heritage and rare chicken breeds. (There are so many ways to save the world with chickens. It’s totally awesome.) Some of the rare breeds are lots of fun to keep, and useful to have around. They are excellent layers, hardy birds, good meat producers, and good mothers.

Like SVF, the Livestock Conservancy is working to keep rare breeds of farm animals from going the way of the dodo: extinct. A breed is a type of domesticated animal with uniform traits. Dachshunds, labs and poodles, for example, are different breeds, but they all . In an effort to interest the general public in these rare animals (and in visiting zoos that display them), I am in the process of writing a series of books about rare breeds of domestic livestock. The first of the series is The Uncommon Horse, a book about the history of domestication of horses and the relationship between people and these.

This book will be welcomed by all those who recognize the genetic and cultural treasure these breeds represent.”—Donald E. Bixby, DVM, Executive Director, American Livestock Breeds Conservancy “Most educated people know about the decline of wild biodiversity, but few are aware of the parallel tragedy in breeds of livestock.   A branch of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (), the center's mission is "to protect the past to protect the future" by conserving historic breeds .
